Wythe
County
Founded in 1790 and named for the first signer of the Declaration
of Independence - George Wythe, Wythe County was settled early
due to its access to water (the New River and many creeks) and
its abundance of natural resources, including lead. But the "great
roads" that have led visitors to the area and the pleasant
climate has long made Wytheville and Wythe County a traveler's
hideaway.
Within its almost 500 square
miles, you will find a variety of traveler-friendly businesses
including over 25 lodging and camping facilities, over 60 restaurants
and dozens of unique and entertaining attractions. Here's just
a sampling:

See how a hundred acre wooded
retreat has been transformed into an herb farm and educational
center at Beagle Ridge Herb Farm. Laugh, cry, sing and dance
along with the latest musical production at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner
Theatre.
Get off the interstate and take
a leisurely drive on a scenic byway. Scale a hundred foot tower
and absorb breathtaking views at Big Walker Lookout. Further
down the mountain, mine for rubies, emeralds and other gems at
Virginia City Gem Mine & Museum.
History buffs will enjoy the
Haller-Gibboney Rock House and Thomas J. Boyd Museums as well
as Wythevilleâ?Ts Historic Walking Tour and the Wythe County
African-American Driving Tour. In neighboring Bland County, learn
about the life of some of the area's first citizens at Wolf Creek
Indian Village & Museum.
Our newest attraction, Fort Chiswell Animal Park offers 45 acres
of animals from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and
South America.
An abundance of outdoor recreation is available for the entire
family with challenging kayaking and vigorous hiking trails to
beautiful scenic views on simpler trails and quiet fishing holes.
With miles and miles of activities to choose from, the New River
Trail State Park & Historic Shot Tower is a "must-see"
on any visit. This 57-mile long trail follows an abandoned railroad
bed along the historic New River. Because of the length of the
trail, several different landscapes can be traveled from steep
rock cliffs to soft rolling pastures. Activities include hiking,
bicycling, horseback riding, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, fishing,
picnicking, and sightseeing. The Shot Tower is almost 200 years
old and was used to manufacture lead shot for commercial sale.
Jefferson National Forest also offers opportunities to view incredible
fauna and flora in every season. Many of the sites of the Virginia
Birding Trail can be found in this area.
