Full of History . . .

Wytheville was founded in 1792 as Evansham on 100 acres of land. It was selected as the county seat of Wythe County. At the time, it was the junction of two great western roads, the Ingles Ferry and the Peppers Ferry trails.

Over two hundred years later, Wytheville still serves as a convenient junction. Today, two federal highways, Interstates 77 & 81, cross here and bring thousands of visitors each day to experience the charm and beauty of Wytheville.

From the pioneer days when our nation's earliest citizens journeyed to the West, to a 20th century First Lady, Wytheville and Wythe County has had a unique role in history. Let your historical visit begin at Wytheville's Heritage Center at 115 West Spiller Street for an orientation to our two historical museums, the Haller-Gibboney Rock House and Thomas J. Boyd Museums. You may also begin the self-guided Wythevilleâ?Ts Historic Walking Tour from this location and learn many interesting facts about over 200 years of history, pre-Civil War to today.

The African American Heritage Driving Tour of Wythe County takes a closer look at this aspect of history through examples of places where people lived, learned, and worshipped.

Just a few minutes away in neighboring Bland County, you will find Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum.

This village of wigwams was meticulously reconstructed to match the layout of a nearby excavation dating to 1215 A.D. Guides in primitive dress demonstrate the day-to-day living skills through use of handmade replicas of tools and containers, hides, and various crafts. The museum holds a local collection of artifacts as well as a gift shop.

Currently in development, the Homestead Museum site will be a living history complex devoted to 19th century life. Authentic log structures have been reconstructed to showcase aspects of daily life such as a smokehouse, springhouse, looming building, and residence. The new Regional Visitors Center is located adjacent as well as the future Gas Station & Transportation Museum.
