Further down the mountain, step back in time in the old pioneer town at Virginia City. You might see an old-fashioned gun fight or hear the songs of the mountains and you can always mine for rubies, emeralds and other gems at the Gem Mine part of this attraction. In this part of Wythe County, you will also travel through the Jefferson National Forest offering opportunities to view incredible fauna and flora in every season. Many of the sites of the Virginia Birding Trail can be found in this area. After you leave the Byway, you can travel the route of Toland's Raid and see several sites of Virginia's Civil War Trails on your way into the town.

But there's still more to see! History buffs can begin their historic journey of the region at Wytheville's Heritage Preservation Center and begin their tours of the Haller-Gibboney Rock House and Thomas J. Boyd Museums. Self-guided walking and driving tours featuring Wytheville's Historic District and the area's African-American heritage are also available. In neighboring Bland County, learn about the life of some of the area's first citizens at Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum.
Just a short drive from the town limits, Beagle Ridge Herb Farm is a 160-acre wooded retreat with over four miles of nature trails as well as display gardens and seasonal events.
There are many new attractions in the eastern end of Wythe County. Who could imagine that in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you would have the opportunity to see zebras and camels. That's just a few of the animals from six continents that you can visit at the 45-acre Fort Chiswell Animal Park. All ages will enjoy the "Outback" experience as you are taken on a guided bus ride through the acreage where you can get up close and personal with the four-legged residents and the Petting Zoo will be enjoyed by even the smallest guests

Nearby, Pleasant Hill Farm's Field of Flowers offers a "cut-your-own" experience with acres of flowers and beautiful scenery to enjoy. West Wind Farm Vineyard Winery offers a beautiful hilltop setting and handcrafted Virginia wines.

Once a literal "poor farm", Wythe County Poorhouse Farm depicts 20th Century history in a unique way through the main house and eight cottages.

With miles and miles of activities to choose from, the New River Trail State Park & Historic Shot Tower is a "must-see" on any visit. This 57-mile long trail follows an abandoned railroad bed along the historic New River. The Shot Tower is almost 200 years old and was used to manufacture lead shot for commercial sale.

For evening entertainment, you will not want to miss the latest production at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre. Presenting "All Musicals, All the Time," this entertainment venue offers evening and matinee performances in a German village architectural setting.
